Description
Psoriasis is a chronic, non-contagious autoimmune condition causing rapid skin cell turnover, resulting in itchy, scaly and inflamed red, purple or silvery patches. Triggers include stress, cold weather, infections, and skin injuries. As a result, certain areas of the skin become scaly and inflamed (swollen and reddish). These patches usually appear on the scalp, elbows or knees but can also occur on other parts of the body. There is no specific cause of psoriasis, but it is believed to result from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Psoriasis symptoms may sometimes occur in cycles becoming severe for several weeks or months, followed by a period of remission or complete recovery and then recurring again.
